Drunk eyes, ahhh yes.

Wonderful essay, Jen. Also, SO MANY people gave you feedback! How did you not get overwhelmed by that?πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

Lol yes. Drunk eyes are totally a thing that runs in my whole family.

And yes you’re so right! I ended up having a couple different draft versions where structural vs polishing feedback was helpful. I’ve also been writing this a few weeks so it came up. What helps with the overwhelm is knowing not all of feedback is relevant.

Hi Jennifer,

I really found your last letter enlightening. I am so proud of you in being able to identify a problem, work through it and successfully achieve your goal. Many times I have felt that I did not fit in with certain people because I would not drink. I would shy away from them rather than succumb to their drinking. As a result I do not have a lot of friends in high school or college. It was hard trying to keep myself focused on my family life and pursuing my nursing careers. Also I had some medical issues I had to deal with.

Keep striving as you have to deal with your situation. You are a bright, beautiful and strong young woman who has a wonderful life ahead of her. Continue on that pathway and watch how your life can be bright and beautiful. I thoroughly enjoy reading your letters.

Always Loving and Caring,

Aunt VickieπŸ™πŸ˜˜

Hey Aunt Vickieβ€” thank you for reading and your reflections! It’s definitely interesting to figure out how we find belonging. I’ve realized that if people pressure me to drink, then they are not my people. My physical and mental health is more important than that.

Keep in touch and looking forward to seeing you over Christmas ❀️

Aww shucks Minh! It was a more challenging piece to share. Appreciate your feedback :)

Yes I did for about a year and that’s what originally brought me to Chicago. I wrote a but about this experience when I got laid off: https://www.jenvermet.com/blog/reflections-from-being-laid-off
